
The Hansen Leadership Institute (HLI) is a fully funded international leadership program in the USA for young emerging leaders interested in leadership, international cooperation, peacebuilding, conflict resolution, and community development. Hosted at the University of San Diego in California, the three-week program brings together young leaders from different countries to develop leadership and communication skills while building international connections.
Funded by the Fred J. Hansen Foundation, the Hansen Leadership Institute covers major program expenses for selected participants, making it an attractive opportunity for students and young leaders seeking a fully funded international leadership experience.
Eligibility requirements may change for each cohort. For the 2026 international program, applicants needed to be 20–25 years old on July 1, 2026 and have completed at least one year of college or university. Recent graduates from 2024 or 2025 could also apply if they were not currently enrolled.
Applicants must demonstrate leadership potential through activities outside the classroom, such as community service, public service, NGO work, volunteering, or other leadership initiatives. Two references are required, including an academic reference and a reference from an NGO or community organization.

Participants are generally responsible for personal expenses and passport-related costs. A U.S. visa is not required to submit the application; selected international participants receive documentation to support the visa application process.
